BCU White Water Safety and Rescue

Course Aims:
Skilfully delivered by UKCC Level 3 coaches (or Level 5 aspirants), this White Water Safety and Rescue is designed to encourage and promote the safe paddling of white-water and the correct application of suitable strategies to perform a rescue.

This course is also a pre-requisite course for 4 Star Leadership candidates

The course will be run over 2 days.

£160 per person (excluding BCU certification fees)

Candidates should be over 16 years of age.
Candidates should be confident in their ability to paddle on grade 2 water.
The course contains a fair amount of swimming, so candidates should be confident swimmers.

Equipment required:

  • White water Kayak or Canoe
  • Dry suit or wetsuit that will keep you warm throughout the day.
  • Throw line
  • A 5m piece of tape sling
  • Single anodized HMS style karabiner (HMS screw gate)
  • Rescue knife
  • Dry land clothing suitable for outdoor use.
  • Food and warm drink

Course Contents:

  • Paddling gear and safety equipment
  • Safe leadership and protocols
  • Safe and aggressive swimming / self rescue
  • Shout, reach and throw bag rescues
  • Use of a harness
  • Attaching to anchors, belays and simple vector pulls
  • Live bait rescue techniques
  • Boat to swimmer techniques
  • Kit retrieval
  • Foot entrapment rescue techniques
  • Scenarios and incident management


If you normally carry other kit on the river, not listed above, please bring it along for the group to discuss.
